Honda VT1300 Cruisers First Ride

2010 Honda VT1300 Cruisers First Ride
let it be known that all three are powered by the tried-and-true engine developed in the VTX1300. The 52-degree V-Twin runs with an undersquare 89.5 X 104.3mm stroke compressing its fuel/air mixture at a 9.2:1 ratio. The single overhead cam design operates three valves per cylinder. A single-pin crankshaft provides a solid lumping character to the mill, while dual balancers keep vibes in the bars and foot controls to a minimum. The biggest change from prior years is in its method of induction, as Honda has abandoned the former CV-style carb for its Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) that features a single 38mm throttle body. It has an auto enrichment circuit that ensures that the bikes spark to life quickly with a flick of the electric start. The new fuel delivery system is what you’d expect from a Honda, silky-smooth in all gears. And while the powerplant in the new VT1300 series is a carryover, let’s break down what makes each of these models

2010 Harley-Davidson Sportster 883L

2010 Harley-Davidson Sportster 883L

Classic lines that haven't changed much since its inception more than 50 years ago, the Sportster's styling stood out.Harley-Davidson has cranked out its Sportster for more than 50 years now! That’s a longevity unequalled in the cruiser marketplace. We selected the Sportster 883 for our shootout because: A) it’s the only H-D model that could qualify for our sub-1000cc displacement cutoff, and, B) it sports an unbeatable price point. In fact, the 883 Low we tested is the most affordable ride in Harley’s lineup at $6999 (black) and $7289 for other colors, like our blue test bike. The ergos took some getting used to, but the Sportster won over riders with its spunky Twin. Fire up the 883 and the air-cooled mill shakes, rattles and rolls out character. The only undersquare configuration in the test, the 76.2mm-wide cylinders run up and down a 96.8mm stroke, with an 8.9:1 compression ratio.

Sportster Dyno stats:
46.6 hp @ 5,600 rpm (second-highest)
45.3 lb-ft @ 5100 rpm (third-highest)
Rear wheel dyno numbers peaked at 46.6 horsepower and 45.3 lb-ft torque, mid-pack in our test group. However, the Sporty packs a punch on the street, with the peppiest throttle feel and pleasing acceleration endearing it to our testers

Honda CB1000R XESS

The XESS (eXtreme European Streetfighter Styling) version of the Honda CB1000R draws on the most extreme potential of this new Naked streetfighter's intensely aggressive power. It focuses the customer's attention on the eventual possibilities for modifying the production model to make it even more stunning.

Our goal with the XESS is to allow CB1000R cutomers to chine out in the crowd (even more!) and give them really breathtaking added value. It is similar to our much-appreciated initiative with the Honda 600 in early 2006. It's clear that Naked customers like to customise their bikes, so we decided to show the seeds of imagination with a reality model.

The Honda CB1000R XESS represents the most radical and extreme styling of the new Italian-designed CB1000R. Just as Honda represents "The Power of Dreams," the CB1000R should be considered "The Model of Dreams" in the Naked category - a dream bike starting with a unique Honda basis and customised with the most impressively designed accessories.

If the CB1000R is spectacularly emotional bike, the velvet-red XESS builds even more on that emotion - aggressive as a panther and ready to holeshot with a premium motorcycle image. That's why the tank is graced with the new Honda Wing emblem that only decorates top-end models like the RC212V, the Fireblade and the DN-01.

The Honda CB1000R XESS project was carried out by a local workshop in Italy. Vita Cicchetti (General Manager, Honda Italy) proposed the initial concept and positioning, while Fausto Giancristofaro sought out to suppliers of the most passionate parts and coordinated the realisation of the special model.

The many parts that have been added or changed include:

- A special Showa-signed and anodized massive front fork
- Hanabira front discs with radial-mounted front callipers
- Titanium twin exhaust
- Lighter and race-ready footpegs
- Aggressive red transmission chain
- Reversed levers
- Velvet seat
- Several carbon fibre elements (such as the front mudguard, front light cowl, rear hugger, side covers and rear seat cowl).

The concept, drawings and development of the mass production model were established byh R&D headquarters in Roma with the support of the Italian Sales Division. With its already sensational design, it provided an ideal basis from which to develop such an impressive and aggressive prototype. The result is a model that celebrates traditional Honda quality with 100% Italian design.

Honda FourTrax Rincon TRX680FA

A powerful 675cc engine, independent rear suspension, electronic fuel injection, Hondamatic automatic transmission, four-wheel disc brakes and an integrated GPScape navigation system all work together to place the FourTrax Rincon far and away above all competitors.

Features & Benefits

- New Blue color joins Red, Olive and Natural Gear™ Camouflage on the TRX680FA.

Unique Features :

- Exclusive Natural Gear Camouflage color scheme offers a pattern that's soft, open and shadow-free for superior camouflage performance in a wide variety of conditions.

- Honda's liquid-cooled four-stroke ATV features a single-cylinder, fuel-injected 675cc OHV engine that provides ample torque and dependable power.

- Honda's automotive-style automatic ATV transmission draws power through a hydraulic torque converter to drive three forward gears and Reverse.

- The FourTrax Rincon features Honda's fully independent ATV rear suspension for comfortable cruising over the toughest terrain.

- Extensive weight-saving measures include the use of aluminum for the following components: forged front upper control arms, rear upper and lower control arms, rear knuckles, front and rear wheels.

Engine/Drivetrain

- Integrated GPScape (see Technology Section)

- High-capacity liquid cooling provides consistent engine operating temperature in extreme conditions for maximum power output and long engine life.

- Camshaft is located adjacent to the cylinder head, reducing engine height. Together with the semi-dry sump, engine height is further reduced for a low center of gravity and excellent handling.

- Advanced design Longitudinally Mounted Engine (see Technology Section)

- Four-valve cylinder head with two short pushrods provides a broad powerband for optimum performance and engine efficiency.

- Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) (see Technology Section)

- Reliable cold-weather starting.

- Engine design produces low emissions and meets California Air Resources Board (CARB) off-road emissions standards.

- Stainless steel exhaust system provides superior corrosion resistance and minimizes noise levels.

- Unique semi-dry-sump oiling system locates the oil tank inside the engine cases, lowering engine height and allowing optimum engine placement for excellent ground clearance and superb handling.

- Standard high-flow oil cooler ensures optimal engine lubrication under difficult operating conditions.

- TraxLok selectable 2WD/4WD system (see Technology Section)

- Torque-Sensitive Front Differential (see Technology Section)

- The rear driveshaft joins the rear final-drive gearcase at a 77° angle, eliminating the weight and complexity of an additional shaft and joints. The design also contributes to the Rincon's considerable 8.0 inches of rear wheel travel.

- USDA-qualified spark arrester/muffler.

Hondamatic Automatic Transmission

- The automotive-style Honda automatic transmission features a hydraulic torque converter, three hydraulic clutches and an Electronic Control Module Unit (ECM) to automatically select one of three forward gears and one reverse gear. The ECM monitors throttle opening, vehicle speed, engine rpm, gear selector position, brake application and engine oil temperature.

- The Honda automatic transmission shifts electronically-eliminating unsightly and trouble-prone vacuum lines-and features engine braking, unlike conventional belt-drive designs.

- Features a filtration system to protect against external contamination. The compact and maintenance-free design means there are no belts to wear out and replace. Using multi-filtered engine oil as hydraulic fluid, the design also simplifies maintenance and ensures an adequate oil supply in all operating conditions.

- Electric Shift Program (ESP™) (see Technology Section)

- A handlebar-mounted control switches the automatic transmission between ESP mode and automatic operation.

- A convenient column-style shift lever permits the rider to easily select Drive, Neutral or Reverse.

Chassis/Suspension

- A rugged steel perimeter frame and four-wheel independent suspension provide an exceptional 10.0 inches of ground clearance.

- Independent double-wishbone front suspension uses premium shock absorbers to provide 6.9 inches of suspension travel for a plush, comfortable ride.

- Honda's independent rear suspension uses a double-wishbone design and features forged-aluminum knuckles and upper/lower A-arms to substantially reduce unsprung weight. The rear knuckle pivots use lightweight metal bushings in place of conventional ball joints and radius arms, eliminating geometry variations as the rear suspension travels through its stroke. This simple design maintains rear wheel alignment and further reduces unsprung weight, contributing to responsive overall handling.

- Lightweight single-tube gas-charged rear shocks and an anti-sway bar provide plush, well-controlled damping throughout the Rincon's exceptional 8.0 inches of wheel travel.

- Dual front disc brake calipers feature a patented built-in scraper system that removes mud and snow from inside the front wheel. This helps prevent the buildup of debris between caliper and rim, ensuring consistent braking performance.

- A rear, center hydraulic disc brake and self-adjusting mechanical rear parking brake are mounted on the rear driveshaft, further reducing unsprung weight and contributing to the Rincon's considerable ground clearance.

Additional Features

- Multi-function LCD digital instrumentation is compact, tough and waterproof, featuring large readouts for gear-selector position, speedometer, odometer, resettable tripmeter and hourmeter/clock. Instrument housing includes LEDs for Drive, Neutral, Reverse, temperature warning and FI warning indicator. A fuel gauge located within the instrument housing comes as standard equipment.

2010 Honda Fury Power Chopper Sport Motorcycle

Honda Fury Power Chopper
Honda Fury Power Chopper
Honda has recently shown its dealers some sneak-peek images of a brand-new direction they will be taking. The bike is the 2010 Honda Fury which is a 1300cc raked-out chopper that will be introduced to the US market early next spring. Apparently we will receive more information later in December. The pictures sent to dealers intentionally had the bottom-half of the bike blurred out. Speculation on the boards is rampant that this bike might be a hybrid with a gas and electric motor.

Honda DN-01

The Honda's stunning new DN-01 is in a class of its own—the world's first crossover bike.
The style like a sportbike, but offering Honda's radical new HFT Transmission, it's an automatic unlike anything you've ever seen. You can shift it into six preset ratios, or you can let it function as a stepless, no-shifting Constantly Variable Transmission, or CVT. The DN-01 is a perfect choice if you're looking to get into motorcycling or if you're just a long-time rider who wants to be on the most cutting-edge bike out there.

It's like no motorcycle you've ever seen. And it's definitely like no motorcycle you've ever ridden. The revolutionary Honda DN-01 is designed to create a nearly seamless connection between you and your riding environment, with a relaxed, low seating position and a clear view to the road ahead.
Its Human Friendly Transmission (HFT) allows you to ride in fully automatic mode, or you can shift it like a manual transmission via handy handlebar-mounted push buttons. You can even rev the powerful V-twin engine at stoplights, something most automatic transmissions won't allow.

The Honda's reputation for forging new categories in motorcycling takes its latest form in the radical DN-01. This futuristic machine combines true sporting performance with a fully-automatic transmission, a low seat height and exceptional style.

The Unique Features
- Powerful 4-valve, 680cc liquid-cooled V-twin engine.

- Low 27.2-inch seat height assures flat-footed confidence when stopped.
- Large-diameter 41mm front fork and single-shock Pro Arm® Rear Suspension (see Technology Section) provide a sporting ride on low-profile Z-rated radial tires.
- Combined ABS (LBS-ABS, see Technology Section) triple-disc brake system for sure-footed braking in varying conditions.
- Combined Braking System (CBS) provides excellent braking power for added confidence in a wide range of operating conditions. CBS applies front braking force whenever the rear brake is operated.
- On the DN-01, equipped with dual front disc brakes with three-piston calipers and a twin-piston rear caliper, rider application of the front-brake lever activates all six brake pistons in the front calipers. Application of the rear-brake pedal activates the dual pistons of the rear caliper and the center piston of the front-left caliper.
- Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS w/CBS) utilizes modulators- one each on the front and rear wheels- driven directly by specially developed electric motors. In operation, an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) monitors wheel and vehicle speed. If one of both of the wheels approach a locking condition, the modulators, via a signal from the ECU, lower hydraulic pressure by acting directly on the brake piston(s). As wheel speed re-approaches motorcycle speed, the hydraulic pressure is increased. This entire process is repeated numerous times in just one second, resulting in optimal braking pressure and enhanced rider control.
- Beautiful aerodynamic design provides protection from the elements.

The Engine/Drivetrain :
- Compact 680cc, liquid-cooled SOHC 52-degree V-Twin provides substantial torque and power for everyday commuting and spirited backroad riding.
- Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI, see Technology Section) with twin 40mm throttle bodies and high-performance 12-hole injectors provide excellent throttle response and fuel economy
while contributing to low emissions.
- Auto enrichment system is integrated into PGM-FI to optimize the air/fuel mixture on cold starts and eliminates the need for a choke.
- ECU-controlled, closed-loop emission control system with oxygen sensor manage the air/fuel mixture and reduce exhaust emissions.
- Front-mounted radiator receives ducted air from fairing shroud to maximize cooling.
- 2-into-1 stainless steel exhaust system with chrome-plated triangular shaped tailpipe is designed to centralize mass for improved handling.
- HFT offers two fully automatic, infinitely variable transmission modes - 'D' (Drive) mode for ordinary riding, and 'S' (Sport) mode for sharper acceleration. In addition, a push-button-selectable, six-speed manual mode allows the rider to upshift/downshift with the simple operation of left thumb-activated buttons.
- The ECU-controlled HFT automatically 'downshifts' when climbing steep grades to maintain optimum power.
- HFT provides 'lock-up' in cruising mode for maximum fuel economy.
- HFT features button-activated mechanical neutral, permitting engine revving when stopped. Mechanical neutral is automatically engaged whenever the engine is turned off, allowing easy maneuverability.

Baja Mexico "Trip to the Tip"

I just obtained some more photos from the Baja trip from one of the other riders. Thought I'd share.

One of the dozen or so military checkpoints we went thru.
The soldiers were always nice and often encouraged us to ride wheelies as we departed.
I tried to oblige whenever I could.

We must have crossed this river 20 times as the road criss-crossed back and forth over it.
Note the dust behind me. I was carrying "express mail" when this water crossing surprised me...

This brand-new pavement would make for an incredible sport-touring road as it wound up into the mountain.
It wasn't paved last April.

Departing a water crossing in a hurry.

A street gang we encountered in San Javier.

One of the many sections of old road that will soon be paved. This one was freshly graded.
Don't wait too long before you head to Baja, they're paving paradise.

This is by far the best shot anyone has ever taken of me on a bike.
We're on the Baja 1000 race course here, and I had been running
around 50 mph when this arroyo crossed the trail. It's a prime example
of why you never, ever, ever "go to sleep" down in Baja.
Thanks for great photo Erin!
